Pen of 3

The 2009 Pen of Three show was held October 22 at the East Tennessee Livestock Center in Sweetwater, Tennessee.  Eight youth participated with nine pens of cattle.  Ellie Johnson of Sequatchie County won the champion honors with her pen of heifers.  Derek Snoderly of Loudon County was reserve champion with his pen of heifers.  The champion pen of steers was awarded to Ross Houston of Monroe County and Daniel Stafford of Loudon County won reserve in the steer division.

During the grading of the pens, 4-H members competed in the skillathon contest.  This competition tests the 4-H member’s knowledge of breeds, equipment, feeds, quality assurance, meats and structure of the beef animal.  Winners in the skillathon competition included Ryley Phillips, Cumberland County, Ellie Johnson, Sequatchie County and Colleen Brown, Loudon County.  Other competitors included Audrey Martin of Cumberland County and Emily Ivey of Loudon County.

The Pen of Three Feeder Calf show was established to allow youth who do not raise show cattle the opportunity to show without having to halter break and groom the animals.  This activity also helps to promote the feeder calf program in East Tennessee.  This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors.  Sponsors included East Tennessee Livestock Center, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Smoky Mountain Feeder Calf Association, Farm Credit Services and UT Extension.

Champion Pen of Feeder Calves was exhibited by Ellie Johnson of Sequatchie County.  Pictured with her is the sponsor, David Thomas with Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
